Please note: We have found Lilley is sometimes spelt both with and without the e depending on the source of the information.

George Lilley, born in Filby in 1881 and baptised on 28th December 1884, was the only son of William and Sarah Ann Lilley neé Simms.

(Note: William had a son from a previous marriage and Sara had a daughter before marriage.)

By 1901 George was employed as a bricklayer's apprentice, his father as a Market Gardener and they were living near Filby Broad, probably in "Lilley's Old Cottage" which still stands today.

William Lilley died in 1910 aged 64 years. Sarah Ann died on the 10th November 1946 aged 97 years.

George enlisted at Great Yarmouth and joined the Royal Garrison Artillery, 204th Siege Battery. His service number was 115634.

George was a Gunner when he died of fever in France and Flanders on 8th December 1917 aged 37 years.

George is remembered on the Filby school and church war memorials and also the Choques Military Cemetery, France. He is also remembered on his father's gravestone in Filby churchyard.

In loving memory of William Lilly, the beloved husband of Sarah Ann Lilly who died Feb 18 1910 aged 64 years.

"Until the day breaks"

Also of George Lilly son of the above who died in France Dec 8 1917 aged 37 years.

"Gone but not forgotten from his loving mother, sisters and brothers."

George was awarded the Victory medal and the British medal.

Please be aware a lot of development remains to be done and our researches are far from complete.

The information provided here is gathered from a number of sources and is, to the best of our knowledge, accurate. We cannot, of course, vouch for the accuracy of all those source and we are aware that names by which individuals were known and those recorded in official records often varied. There are also gaps in the official record as some records were lost to enemy action during the Second World War and through the passage of time.
